Google tests many things and not all of them end up working or being rolled out worldwide. In this case, it has been reported that they are testing in the United States and India a new feature that allows for a bit of personalization in the Google Search Top Stories module, one that traditionally stood out for sending a lot of traffic to media outlets, but which nowadays is also affected by AI Overviews.

It finally seems something is shifting over AI Overviews and Google’s latest exercise of market power. Reuters has exclusively revealed that a group of independent publishers has filed an antitrust complaint, largely because there is no effective way to opt-out of Google’s AI without completely destroying traffic from Google Search.

AI, and more specifically Google, is breaking the Internet as we know it today. In this post, Cloudflare’s CEO, Matthew Prince, has once again emphasised that quality content creators are not being adequately protected. According to this executive, when a search engine integrates AI in its current form, it practically sends no traffic back to the source, contradicting what Google claims.

The November 2024 core update for Google Search has just wrapped up, and Google isn’t giving us a moment to catch our breath. The December 2024 core update is already rolling out, introducing changes to the search engine and, presumably, to Google Discover—though once again, we have very little information to work with.
