A single tweet has sparked a new storm around the so-called Wpdrama. The legal battle is ongoing and could last for years and according to Matt Mullenweg, it could end up causing his bankruptcy and even shutting down WordPress.org—an outcome that would have huge ramifications for the community, given the substantial costs required to maintain the platform’s infrastructure.

The WPdrama appears far from over. In yet another twist—detailed in an article by Matt Mullenweg himself, owner of Automattic and one of the creators of WordPress—several prominent figures who threatened to fork WordPress (i.e., create a new product by branching off the open-source code) have been urged to follow through on their plan.

Since I launched CMS MAG GPT, I’ve been like a kid with a new toy. I’ve uploaded over six years of content and can’t stop asking it tough questions. This time, I asked for its take on the ongoing nuclear war between WP Engine and Matt Mullenweg (Automattic). The answer—spoiler alert—is a resounding reproach for Mullenweg.

Automattic has made a dramatic 180-degree shift in its approach to WordPress—or at least its open-source component—by deciding not to contribute at the same level it has until now. From this point forward, its work will be limited to matching the weekly hours contributed by WP Engine, which amount to just 45 hours per week.

The International News Media Association (INMA), in partnership with Google News Initiative, recently introduced the updated version of its CMS Vendor Selection Tool. This tool now includes a refreshed list of CMS platforms that have been analyzed, serving as a useful starting point or an additional resource for selecting a CMS—though it should not be considered the sole source of information.

The court has granted WP Engine’s request for a preliminary injunction, arguing that without it, the harm suffered would be irreparable. Automattic countered by asserting that WordPress remains free and open, emphasizing that anyone can continue using it. However, the court’s initial ruling favors WP Engine.
