Google does not provide figures for its AI Overviews because it claims the project is still liable to change. The truth, however, is that the data would not work in its favour, even though the company could publish them in the not-too-distant future. All that changes now thanks to Sistrix: content creators no longer have to wait for Google’s goodwill, because these metrics are already within reach.
In a statement, Sistrix, the renowned SEO measurement and optimisation tool, announced that AI Overview data are now available in Spain. Within the platform, any keyword that triggers an AI Overview is flagged with a blue AI icon in the keyword tables.
It is also possible to filter results so that only those activating AI Overviews are displayed. According to several studies, this filter lets us pinpoint the keywords where content creators stand to lose around two-thirds of their traffic, because the search engine answers directly—apparently by repackaging our own content with its artificial intelligence (AI).
Sistrix is careful to add that the filter refers solely to the SERP feature itself: in other words, for any keyword where your domain has an organic position, an AI Overview is shown. This does not necessarily mean your domain is cited in the AI-generated answer, and that information is not yet available, although it is on the roadmap.
Another important note from Sistrix is that AI Overviews do not yet replace organic results inside its tool and therefore are not factored into the Visibility Index. In reality, visibility is now far lower than the Index suggests, even if the drop is not yet reflected.
Finally, the company says the new data are invaluable for tracking the influence of AI Overviews on your traffic, spotting new topics with and without AI Overviews to target through SEO techniques, and assessing visibility in context. It is a significant step that sheds light on an area Google has kept in the dark.
Cornered by OpenAI, Google is taking desperate measures and turning its search engine into a kind of chatGPT, exploiting its dominant position—particularly in Spain—without consulting content creators and without ever remunerating them for scraping their material (the only known deal is with Reddit, whose traffic has rocketed in recent months). Sistrix’s innovation brings a ray of clarity to the gloom Google has imposed upon us.
